Long before he was "discovered", John and a group of friends at the St. Michael's Choir School formed an impromptu a cappella quartet. This group of friends "performed" by caroling house to house in the week before Christmas and their only payment was an invitation to any Christmas party that they happened on.

The Mistletones, formed in 1980, out of the original quartet into an eight member, four part a cappella group. All the members were former students at St. Michael's Choir School and have now been singing together for over 30 years. They became such a favorite that they were persuaded by family and friends to record two albums. The two recordings, produced by Peter Mann, are "A Cappella Christmas" and "Hello Christmas".

John's continued to perform with The Mistletones until the launch of his solo career in 1992.
