Ireland has experienced wave after wave of emigration over the past century and a half. It's impact has been represented in many art forms, in song and story, painting and poetry. This work is an attempt to present the 'influence of such separation on the feelings and emotions of people in isolated communities. The musical idiom is Irish traditional, further developed to capture the power and expression of a full orchestra. The story line is based on life in a small island community, of love and disappointment, of dreams and delusions. It can be viewed as a microcosm of Ireland as a whole where both the local community and exiles suffer the haemorrhage of emigration. Life and emigration are entwined in a web of thoughts and emotions, separation and loneliness, boats and planes, hellos and goodbyes. The importance of marriage in a small community cannot be understated. It is a sign of hope and growth, of trust in the future, of commitment to spouse and community, a sign of new life. An island wedding is therefore of special significance to the community as a whole. This orchestral suite is performed by the RTE Concert Orchestra with soloist Frankie Gavin on fiddle.
