Taking their name from 18th century nationalist and patriot Theobald Wolfe Tone, Derek Warfield, Brian Warfield, Noel Nagle, and Tommy Byrne have created a corpus of work that celebrates Ireland's long struggle and resilience. This band kept the flame of Irish nationalism alive for over 25 years, helping its people to find common bonds in their rich musical culture.
RIFLES OF THE IRA is one of the Wolfe Tones' best efforts. Not surprisingly an album concerned with Irish pride, this set symbolizes Ireland's spirit and durability, best evidenced on "God Save Ireland" and "Big Strong Man," songs marked by powerful choruses. Sung in unison by all four Wolfe Tones, these songs add charm and muscle to this album. Brian Warfield's "Uncle Nobby's Steamboat" rounds out the album with the upbeat, optimistic chorus, "we're goin' where the grass is growing green, to a mystic land that no one else has seen." The band's potent message of freedom, survival, and Irish glory remains inspiring.
